Bobby Moynihan - Mystery Team movie
I seriously hope this movie finds a buyer! I can't express how much I want to see it!
Bobby's also performed a couple times in an off-Broadway show called Celebrity Autobiography, where real excerpts from celebrity penned biographies are read aloud and acted out. It sounds cute, so if you're anywhere in the vicinity of New York you should look up the info and check it out!

Derrick Comedy’s ‘Mystery Team’ Seeks Comedy in Dark (and Long-Winded) Places
To say I struggled with the best way to word the title of this post would be a grave understatement. Rather than spend more time coming up with a better headline, though, I figured it’d be better to write a halfway decent post, watch Friday Night Lights, and call it a night. ANYWAY.
A few weeks ago I had the misfortune/privilege of watching the latest offering from the infamous viral video collective known as Derrick Comedy. Their newest attempt at hyper-offensive content is a painfully long, look-at-what-we-can-do feature length film entitled Mystery Team. Peep the trailer below:
The title and plot are harmless enough: a group of childhood friends take on the task of solving a murder mystery in a town that has condemned them as juveniles for years. But where Derrick and Co. excel is in the ebb and flow of the comedic timing that exists in between the relatively simple story arc. Take, for example, a scene in which the team finds themselves in a gentleman’s club: pure comedic brilliance in a relatively unoriginal, stereotypical setting. The cameos in the film, recognizable from many of their shorts, also enhance the experience, particularly their friend who works at the grocery store, played by the hilarious Bobby Moynihan. But while there are plenty of laugh out loud (LOL) moments to be found throughout the film, it ends feeling like an exercise in patience testing.
With Mystery Team, the YouTube stars and College Humor stalwarts seem to be trying too hard. Whereas the film fires on all cylinders for the first, say, half of the movie, with each progressing minute afterward it gasps for more laughs and relevant plot points (and camera cuts). The question is whether the team (famous for delivering pithy, side-stitching shorts on the internet) felt they had something to prove by making the movie an hour too long or if they simply skipped all their editing classes while attending NYU.
I had the pleasure of seeing the group perform live in Syracuse, NY back when they went by the name of the Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz and I still haven’t forgotten the ingenious sketches they performed. They were clearly on to something, which is why I wasn’t surprised to see their videos popping up on YouTube, eventually boasting over 10 million views per video. While Mystery Team is very much in the same delightfully offensive vein as their online content, it sputters to a standstill by the end making you wonder why they didn’t cut it down. Someone mentioned to me that the Sundance cut of the film was much shorter, so it’s possible they are still planning to work on it. They have so much potential, and maybe next time they’ll remember that writing 140 pages worth of script doesn’t equate to actually having 140 pages worth watching. Either way, Mystery Team is an excellent effort: hilarious and well shot despite its sleep-inducing 3rd Act.

Young Guns
It seems like we grow up slower these days. Now of course some folks do not, due to tragedies (parents die and the oldest sibling takes care of the younger ones). But by and large, we seem to grow up slower. Young adults are marrying later, having kids later (and there is nothing inherently wrong with this I don't think-I'm in this category). Yet sometimes this attitude carries over to the expectations young folks have for themselves, and of course the expectations leadership has for them.
That's why I think it is so imperative that we do all that we can to fight against an attitude that says, "When I get older, I'll do this or that." Why not do something great for Jesus' Kingdom at a young age?
Mark Driscoll, reflecting on Paul's admonition to Timothy "don't let anyone look down upon you because you are young.," lists some great examples of younger folks used greatly by Jesus to further His Kingdom. The point is not simply to challenge young folks, but to challenge all folks to start thinking about how they can be used by God now, and not later.

Beyonce Runs “Single Ladies” Video Contest
How did Bobby get to be one of the three dancers (along with legend Justin Timberlake and star Andy Samberg)?
Simple. He wrote this skit and drove it, talking Lorne and many others into it. You the man, Bobby!!!
============================================
What has become a widespread exercise in imitation is now a contest, as Beyonce is inviting fans to submit videos to her “Single Ladies” tune, with the winner to have his or her clip shown during the singer’s upcoming “I Am…” world tour.
The grand-prize winner of the video contest will also receive $2,500 along with the exposure on the concert tour.
The video Beyonce released featuring her in leotard and high heels with two dancers has been parodied on “Saturday Night Live” by Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg, and Bobby Moynihan, and has also been imitated in numerous iterations on YouTube.
The "Single Ladies" contest is open to people 18 and older in the U.S., the UK and Japan as well as Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada (excluding Quebec province), Hong Kong, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore and Switzerland. The deadline for submissions is March 6.

Bobby Moynihan Challenges Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake with Jessica Biel. How is that fair?
SNL's Bobby Moynihan Challenges Justin Timberlake
After working with Justin Timberlake in the "Single Ladies" sketch featuring Beyoncé Knowles, rookie Saturday Night Live castmember Bobby Moynihan now claims he can take on the pop star.
In this video interview with MTV News, Moynihan asserts, "I can take him. I mean, he's jacked, but I'm chubby. I'll sit on him." Joking aside, Bobby admitted of Timberlake, "He was awesome...another class act."
As for that "jacked" body of Justin's, going on regular hikes with his lady Jessica Biel and her canine companion is just one of the many ways that the singer keeps his back--and other body parts--sexy.

I'm down on Brazil
About every other Herald article I write, someone contacts me via my blog, email, or church phone number. I always enjoy hearing from folks who've identified with, been touched by, or simply thought some more about what I've written.
Immediately after the article came out, a woman called and left a Voice Mail at the church. Apparently her grandson, who lives in Bradenton is going through just what David Goldman is going through. His Brazilian wife took their daughter to Brazil and said, "I'm never coming back."
I talked to this woman for about 15 minutes and found out some details that saddened me even more. A minister in Brazil told another family member that this form of "kidnapping" actually happens a lot in Brazil. American babies are "in" over there.
Anyhow, she told me her grandson is a Christian. So he does know Someone who suffered the loss of His own child. It would be great though, if these two men (he and Goldman) could meet. How deep the fellowship these two could potentially have!
Sharks feeling the pinch too
In today's economy, everyone is feeling the pinch. Man and beast alike, and I'm not talking about pets. Even sharks have fallen "prey" to the economic downturn. Yep, shark attacks were down this past year, and it looks as if the economy is to blame. Check out this study put out by a University of Florida researcher. The only question is, how will they respond to the economic stimulus package?

Exchange Scenes
We had another discussion on The Reason For God this past Sunday in our Christian Ed. In chapter 12, Keller goes into some detail (although he does admit there is much more he doesn't elaborate on) on the need for the cross.
Many in his circles, which may or may not be those in your circles, have a problem with a loving God requiring a bloody sacrifice. And the sacrifice of His Son on top of that? Why couldn't he just forgive us if we're sorry?
Instead of simply stating immediately that God is also fully Holy, which He is, Keller begins with the common ground of love. In other words, "Since you already believe that God is a loving God, let me show you how the only way to really be loving (forgive sins/reconcile people) is the cross.
The chapter beautifully fleshes out how forgiveness always requires suffering for the one offering forgiveness, and that real love involves a costly exchange.
The loving costly exchange has been depicted in movies and literature throughout the years. One example Keller mentions is the exchange scene in Tale of Two Cities. We spent a few moments thinking of some examples as in Gone Baby Gone, Man on Fire. But one thing we noticed was that most of these exchange scenes involved a "bad" or normal person giving themselves for someone who was innocent.
It wasn't until after our discussion that we came up with a few examples of a "good" person giving him/herself for an unworthy guilty person. Gone in 60 Seconds depicts a semi-reformed car thief willing to give his life for an undeserving and ungrateful brother. That's getting closer.
My personal favorite exchange scene-though it is hard to take-is To End All Wars, where an innocent man gives himself up to die in the place of a murderer. These kind of exchanges more closely parallel the exchange of the cross, where Christ died for people who were at the time his enemies (Romans 5:8).
Can you think of any more exchange scenes that depict a "good" guy giving himself for a "bad" /guilty guy or gal? These are fewer in number for obvious reasons, but I'd love to know more out there. Please comment if you have any which come to mind.

Herald Article: A father's heartbreaking love for his son
Here's my latest Bradenton Herald Article. After some shoddy Herald editing jobs recently, Randy and I are getting the point: we need to do the editing ourselves. That's fine. Point well taken.
This one looks just like I intended it to look, with the exception of some extra periods here and there. So for those of who you don't read the Bradenton Herald, or who skip the Faith and Values section (although its pretty tough to skip when you see my goofy picture-it really is goofy, more than usual-on the top of the column), you may want to click here to read it.
