Color Day Themes: Teacher's Pet (Red Delicious Apple)

Happy September, dolls!  Today's board is inspired by school tradition and the infamous "teacher's pet".  Being teacher's pet isn't easy; there's studying, class participation, and of course the time-honored tradition of presenting your teacher with "thoughtful gifts".  And, when it comes to gifts, there is nothing more traditional and formally ingrained in our minds than a ripe, red, perfectly polished apple. "Back to School" can remind you of a lot of things like paper bag book covers, pencil shavings, and plaid, but when you think of school and teachers and Fall and put it all together, you get a big juicy apple.  Luckily, here in New Jersey, we have an abundance of orchards! So, in September and October we can all flock to our nearest farm and pick our apples, which may be used to help get us to the head of the class, or better yet in pies, as place card holders, & as centerpieces. However you choose to use this fall favorite, incorporating apples into your Fall decor is a surefire way to get an A+ from us!

Som sex offenders not welcome in the NFL

The NFL has a number of felons in it. My new secondary team, the Cincinnati Bengals, since the Bucs won't be on TV up here (but they won't be on TV in the Tampa area either for half of their games anyway!) have boasted their fair share of not-so-law-abiding citizens. Now there is a player conduct policy in place by Commissioner Roger Godell, so that athletes like Ben Rothlesberger rape (allegedly) young ladies but get off through loopholes, they still get suspended. Even if that 6 game suspension will probably go down to 4 games for being nice.

But here is a story of alleged rape, that the victim even recanted, which has this lad unable to break into the NFL. Apparently there is a line that the teams won't cross and here it is. But I wonder whether this sex offender did anything worse than many other NFL players.

As heinous as this act was, I'm reminded that in Christ we do truly do have a clean slate. While its hard to tell from the article, the athlete may actually get that. Hopefully because probably won't experience that truth anywhere else.

Hilary Duff is newly married!! Her fabulous marriage...

GreekBloggers.com
So, guys, the big news are..το κορίτσι μας μεγάλωσε και ...παντρεύτηκε τον παίκτη του χόκει Mike Comrie!
Η πρόταση γάμου έγινε στις αρχές του χρόνου στη Hawaii εντελώς ξαφνικά σε ενα απο τα ταξιδια του ζευγαριού.
Ο γάμος φυσικά ήταν υπέροχος. To νυφικο ήταν Vera Wang, τα παππύτσια Christian Louboutin

Back to School: Dorm 101

College means many things: studying, partying, all-nighters, co-ed dorms, ramen noodles, etc.  But, you certainly cannot appreciate all of these until your dorm room is properly equipped. Sure you'll bring photos from home, posters and prints for your walls, and your trusty alarm clock and, if you're lucky like we were, your dorm will be fully furnished, leaving you to simply organize and decorate.  But, some people don't have the same luxury and will have to furnish their dorms or apartments themselves.  Whatever the case, there are some dorm room items that are essential to your survival.  Here are a few that we think really make the grade:

Don't get stuck airing your dirty laundry to your roommate or cute boys down the hall! This adorable ruffled laundry bag is the perfect addition to any dorm room, adding a bit of style, while secretly hiding your unmentionables, and serving as a great way to tote your laundry to the nearest washer!

Speaking of laundry, we remember all too well how expensive it was, how you could never fit it all in one load, and how terribly precious quarters became after just a few weeks.  Save your money (and your sweaters) by investing in a convenient, folding drying rack!

Living with another person means learning the importance of compromising and communicating.  Need to send your roommate a message or warning?  We like this dry erase memo board that you can hang on your doorknob!  It's much classier than a sock and can convey more than one message so you'll never be confused.

Reading, just jotting down some notes, researching...all these things would be much easier to do in bed if you had a comfy and practical lap desk to use.  These babies were essential for dorm room studying, making use of your bed and turning it into a functional study space!  Does studying leave you parched? No worries, this desk has a built in beverage holder!

While some dorms do come with desks, others might require you to supply your own. Now, even if you plan to do your work while lounging on your couch or bed, it is a still a good idea to have a desk and dedicated space for your studies. If you need to get your own there are plenty of affordable options from Ikea.  We like this simple desk with the built in shelves for extra storage!

Why not have a vibrant chair to go with your new desk?  Study or surf the web in style with this hot pink chair, from Ikea.  It might not be the most comfortable in the world, but it's pink so we'll just let that slide for now.

If your dorm has communal bathrooms, like most do, then you'll need somewhere to hang those wet towels and bathrobes when you get back from your bathroom trip!  Some of the best storage solutions are over the door hooks and hangers and we love these brightly colored hangers, available at Modcloth.

While a coffee table probably is probably not something you'll see in a small dorm room, having a table by your bed to place your coffee or easy mac is pretty essential.  We love these colorful, foldable tables because they are fun and versatile (use the tray alone or on the stand as a table!) and they fold up so they are easy to store out of the way when you're in need of more floor space.

College is about being social, but what good is being social if you have nowhere for your guests to sit!  Make your dorm room comfortable and inviting with impromptu seating, like these floor pillows, that can be carefully stacked out of the way when not in use!

The micro-fridge is quite possibly the handiest thing for college students and while we hope your place comes with it many times it does not.  You may think this is an obvious one, but we figured we would just mention it because it is absolutely essential to dorm room survival.   It's space saving, compact, and convenient for those leftovers, healthy snacks, and beverages.

Fun, bright bedding is a must-have to liven up those boring flat white dorm walls. We think snuggling up with this Tiffany Blue duvet set would be a lovely way to add some of your personality, and a little color, to your space with minimal effort.

And, finally, the all important shower essentials!  No college student would be complete without these items.  First, there's the "shower shoe" because no one wants whatever crazy bacteria might be lingering on the floors of those communal showers.  Then, of course, is the plastic caddy so you can tote all your shower essentials with you. And last, but not least, the bathrobe.  Why? Because walking down the hall in a towel is never a good idea. Imagine carrying that caddy in one hand, unlocking your door with the other, and all the while trying to hold up your towel... that would be just asking for a disaster!

A fan's thoughts on seeing Bobby Moynihan live

I saw [Bobby Moynihan] at the Del Close Marathon this year a bunch of times, with his UCB group and with Derrick Comedy and in some random appearances. Seeing him on snl tonight made me really miss getting to see him live in person. He is a super funny dude and is such a good inproviser. Seeing him live also confirmed that I need to start improv classes this year.

And I saw him tap dance with bottlecaps masking taped to his shoes.

Almost Christian?

One of the article's points is that many teenagers don't believe in the gospel but this:
....."a moralistic therapeutic deism." Translation: It's a watered-down faith that portrays God as a "divine therapist" whose chief goal is to boost people's self-esteem.

Unfortunately very accurate in my experience with youth. But also accurate was the author's challenge for parents to explain WHY they do certain things. Is it their faith which moves them to show love for others, or are things done out of moralism? Without explanation, because truth is best taught while it is being caught, we leave our children with nothing but "the gospel of niceness." I love that line.

The last very helpful point the author raises, which all centers around Kendra Chrissy Dean in her book Almost Christian, is the negative affect parents can have on their children's spirituality. Youth are now growing up noticing there is little difference between Christians and non-Christians. Here's but a small suburban example.

The parents next door don't claim to be Christian, and have no qualms about skipping church for sports or any other activity that pops up. But I wonder how many Christian parents even ask the question, "What is this teaching my child, and what will be the best for HIS or HER faith down the road?" Regardless of where you land with the church and sporting events, and what is acceptable or not acceptable in regards to participation in such Sunday activities, it's hard to argue against simply asking and honestly answering that question.
With Connar growing up loving anything to do with "balls," I'll soon be fighting this battle-but battles can be well worth it.  It is foolish to think that years of any behavior which ignores Jesus' daily Lordship will go unnoticed by our kids. Guess what commitment to the gospel and church they'll soon have if they don't see it in us. Will we continue to see kids grow up to be "Almost Christian?" I hope not, but this is a sobering reminder to parents, pastors, children and youth workers.

Back to School: Laptop Chic

If you're on-the-go like us, then you're used to toting everything around on your shoulders: money, makeup, cell phone, and laptop. With the ability to type your class notes (or more likely to distract yourself from a boring lecture by checking out the latest PDR post), a laptop is a fundamental accessory to just about all college students. And, to keep your laptop safe and sound as you tote it around town, you need to invest in a sturdy, but stylish, laptop sleeve. Here are some laptop sleeves that will keep your computer warm and snug, but will still look good in the process:

Nothing says girly like a pink laptop sleeve!  For all your computing on the go we like this retro looking sleeve by be.ez.

Who said class is boring?  Obviously someone who did not have this fun and stylish laptop sleeve.  Choose a fun print that expresses your personality, like this one, handmade by Etsy seller bertiescloset!

You can never go wrong with polka dots!  The colors on the sleeve will certainly brighten even the most intense study session. Available on Amazon.

Just because you're stuck in NJ studying for your midterms doesn't mean you can't at least pretend you are sunning yourself in the tropics.  Add a little summer to your fall with this warm and bright sleeve, available at Target.

Calling all fashionistas!  The search for a chic case that can turn your laptop into a stylish accessory is finally over thanks to our finding this beauty, exclusively available at Urban Outfitters.

Vintage charm, bold colors, and the unique Navajo print make this sleeve, from Zappos, really stand out from the crowd!

Talk about practical!  This case is fun and casual, but still fashionable enough to take you from class work to class act in no time. We especially love this designer case, for sale at Walmart, for it's separate storage pocket that can safely secure loose items.

Time to surf the interweb!

"shorter" thoughts

In order to graduate from RTS-Orlando, we had to pass a bible proficiency exam as well as memorize the answers to many questions from the Westminster Shorter Catechism. The WSC includes a number of questions and answers that help sum up some main teachings and themes of the bible and form part of the "constitution" of ours and many Reformed denominations.

Sometimes people elevate the overall document we call the Westminster Standards too highly, and put them on par with the bible. Folks like me, who take a few exceptions (conscience bound disagreements over applications of the documents) here and there, can soon become the "bad guys" and may have some fun getting ordained.

Nevertheless the misuse of something potentially good, by people who consider themselves "Truly Reformed" shouldn't cause us to throw the whole thing out. I don't want to be that Angry Reformed "likes-to-theologically-fight-guy" who is just always angry at the unrighteousness of others (often overlooking his own arrogance or lack of joy). I recently met a pastor like this.

But we need not turn into likes-to-fight guy, just for knowing the same stuff. I used this C.D. put out by a seminary buddy named Bruce Benedict to assist in my memorization. The thing I like most about this music is that it is actually good. And memorizing it to music with a guitar and percussion has allowed much of the lyrics (simply the Q and A) from the catechism to stick even now. They're not like Barney songs which stick and then you want to get rid of them.
In fact, when I was preaching on Ruth 4 a few weeks ago, I noticed the book didn't end with Naomi holding a baby, but with a genealogy ending in David. The book was really about King David, who then points us to King Jesus. So the sermon's application questions were 1.) what does a King do 2.) and what would it look like in your life today?

I thought back to how "Jesus executes the office of a King." WSC 26 includes his duties as "ruling" and "defending." There's other stuff, there, but the main ways Jesus operates as King is by ruling and defending. So I emphasized letting him rule (Lordship over all of life) and letting him protect (trusting him to deliver).

Its not just good for preaching, but for life. How would you define sin, which can be nebulous at times? Well the WSC gives us a fairly complete definition to work with: a lack of conformity or transgression against the will of God. Now others have come and fleshed that out a bit more, but at least you have a foundation. At least you can share or defend what sin is to others in a simple trustworthy way.

Anyhow, just wanted to share with you the benefits of having some grasp on the WSC.

Finding the life you've always wanted in retirement

I came across this book the other day when I was searching through Amazon.com. I've learned over the years that publishers often get the final say when naming books, just as newspapers do when they publish articles from "contributing religion editors" like myself in Bradenton (even though one of my "spiritual gifts" is naming sermons and articles.)

Anyhow, I think the title of this book is quite telling of an American audience that either embraces its career as an idol or considers it non-redeemable: The Joy of Retirement: Finding happiness, Freedom, and the life you always wanted.  How sad a picture of work and life that "the life you always wanted" would really be found upon retiring. I'm thankful for those retired folks like my Grandma who continues to use her retired life to graciously and generously minister to her family, friends, and church family. I'm wondering if this "life we've always wanted" means self-autonomy or real love for others. Standard untamed American retirement almost always leans toward the former.
